As part of the Low-Carbon City Partnership between Bonn and Chengdu, four representatives and experts from the NGOs including Chengdu Urban River Association (CURA), Roots & Shoots Chengdu as well as the Sichuan University visited Bonn from Sunday, 16 November to Friday, 21 November 2014. The objective of the study visit was to establish networks between organisations; promote knowledge exchange and experiences in NGOs activities; and to enhance sustainable and long-term partnerships between organisations in both partner cities.

On Monday November 17, 2014 the first Bonn-Chengdu NGO meeting took place in the Germanwatch office in Bonn. Ten organisations from Bonn and Chengdu joined the meeting to introduce their organisations and specific approaches. The meeting provided the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the respective context, political framework and role of civil society in both Germany and China. Furthermore, topics for further exchange or cooperation opportunities have been identified such as environmental education projects, school partnerships and sustainable agriculture. Both sides agreed to develop a framework to further enhance the Bonn-Chengdu Low-Carbon Partnership including new partnerships and deeper cooperation between Bonn and Chengdu NGOs and civil society.

After the NGO meeting, Chengdu NGO representatives joined the official program of the Bonn-Chengdu Low-Carbon City Partnership taking place in Bonn from November 18-21 together with the Chengdu city delegation. Besides visiting “Sustainable Bonn” partners to study and discuss specific measurements and strategies to reduce energy, water and waste consumption, the delegation visited Lekabo food waste and biogas company, the Energy Agency Bonn as well as Bonn Orange. Additionally, the Chengdu NGO experts met with the Water Network NRW (Friends of the Earth), the mobile community garden "Neuland" in Cologne, the Freikost Bonn a package-free organic food store and cafe and enjoyed the discussions and a joint dinner at the Ermekeilkarree in Bonn.
