Chengdu Delegation visit Bonn 2014-11-18
Meet & Greet with the Chengdu delegation

A delegation from Chengdu visited Bonn from Tuesday, 18 November to Friday, 21 November 2014, to study the concept of “Sustainable Bonn” (SB) and discuss the next steps of the Low-Carbon City partnership. The follow-up visit was made after the trip of an expert group of Bonn to Chengdu in October 2014. The project “Sustainable Bonn” was selected as one potential component of the low-carbon cooperation Bonn-Chengdu. The City of Bonn launched the “Sustainable Bonn” (SB) initiative in 2006, supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and coordinated by the Tourismus und Congress GmbH Bonn. It successfully supports Bonn’s conference & hotel sector in developing individual sustainability strategies.

The Chengdu delegation, headed by Huang Hao, Deputy Division Chief of Chengdu Municipal Development and Reform Commission, comprising five government representatives as well as four experts from non-governmental organisations and universities in Chengdu, visited “Sustainable Bonn” partners to study and discuss specific measurements and strategies to reduce energy, water and waste consumption in their hotels, restaurants and conference venues.

A preparatory meeting on November 18 in the Old Town Hall of Bonn addressed specific aspects of climate mitigation and low carbon development in Bonn.  Mr. Christoph Caspary, Stadtwerke Bonn, introduced the role and responsibilities of the municipal utilities provider of Bonn in the field of climate mitigation with a focus on waste cogeneration plant, district heating and electric mobility. Mr Stephan Lintker, EnergyAgency.NRW (EnergieAgentur.NRW) introduced the regional and national energy policy framework, with a focus on the energy region of North Rhine-Westphalia, the role of the energy agency in NRW as well as state-wide campaigns and joint actions such as "50 Solar Housing Estates in NRW“ (www.50-solarsiedlungen.de), "100 Climate Protection Estates in NRW“ (www.100-klimaschutzsiedlungen.de).

The program of the delegation included visits to and discussions with "Sustainable Bonn" partners such as Hotel zur Post, Hotel Maritim, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as Lekabo food waste and biogas company, the Energy Agency Bonn, a passive house building and Bonn Orange.
